Turns out the guy in the suit was a detective. The uniform stayed back, watching Sav intently.
She poured out coffee as they all sat in the living room. When she was finished, he pulled her down beside him on the sofa. Protective as always.
âWell?â Sav asked.
âDo you know a Professor Gerald Grant?â the detective asked.
âI do,â she replied.
âI think heâs talking to me, Livvy,â Sav said gently.
Oh. Right.
But wait . . .
âThis is about Gerald?â she said.
The detective eyed her for a moment. âYou know him well?â
âI work with him. I work in the library at Montana State. Heâs a professor there. Whatâs he accusing Sav of?â
âOf threatening him with bodily harm.â
âWhen?â she asked
âEarlier today, at just after nine a.m. Have you met him?â the detective asked Sav. âDid you threaten him?â
âYeah, I was talking to him at around that time today, in the parking lot of the university,â Sav replied.
Fred stiffened. She could feel him ready to pounce on Sav.
âBut he didnât threaten Gerald, I did,â she said.
They all gave her suspicious looks and Sav tensed, turning to her.
âLivvy,â he warned.
âSav is protective of me. But I should have . . . I should have done this earlier. Called you guys and told you what happened. But Gerald threatened my job. And I need it. So I kept quiet. But now Sav is in trouble and itâs my fault.â
âMaâam?â the detective said gently. âCan you explain what youâre talking about?â
âYesterday, Gerald Grant attacked me.â She drew the sleeve of her dress up to show them her wrist.
The detective frowned. âCan you tell us what happened?â
âMy car broke down on the way home. We now think it was tampered with. I called someone to tow it and he said it looks like someone put water in the gas tank.â
âCan I have his name?â the detective asked.
âI have his card, Iâll get it for you.â She jumped up and grabbed her handbag, searching through it for Atlasâs card. She handed it to the detective, who took down the details.
Sav remained silent and still. She wished she knew what he was thinking.
âGerald pulled up behind me and offered me a ride to get my boys.â Lord, please donât let them look into her guardianship of her nephews. It made her sick to think about. But she couldnât let Sav go back to jail either.
âI thought it was harmless to accept a ride from him. But instead of taking me to the daycare, he pulled into the parking lot of this park close by. I managed to get my seatbelt undone. But the door was locked and he grabbed my wrist before I could unlock it.â
âThen what happened?â the detective asked gently.
âThis woman came along. She knocked on the window and yelled at him to stop. He loosened his hold and I got out. Then he took off.â
âYou have her details?â
âYes, she gave them to me in case I decided to call you to report him.â
âWhy didnât you call us?â
âHe told me heâd get me fired.
